ROCKET CITY DISABILITY

Huntsville, known the world over as "the Rocket City," is blessed to have a vigorous, diversified economy that brings with it an almost unequaled quality of life, when compared to almost any other city its size.

In spite of that, we have to realize that there are many individuals in the Huntsville area who are disabled and need financial assistance.  One of the bulwarks of financial help available to the disabled is the US Social Security disability insurance program (SSDI).  The problem with SSDI is that it can be difficult to access.  Unfortunately, in safe guarding the system from abuse by unqualified claimants, Social Security has made it difficult for qualified individuals to obtain disability benefits quickly or easily.

The entire industry in which I work is geared toward taking disability claims that have been wrongfully denied, appealing them, and eventually collecting benefits.  The key word is eventually.  An appeal can take 18 months or more, leaving the disabled person holding the bag for a very long time.

My firm looks at every opportunity to get a speedy decision.  Sometimes we can get an expedited decision in a matter of weeks, not years.  But not always.  I hope one of the things that the new Commissioner of Social Security does is seek ways to speed up relief for those claimants who truly qualify for disability assistance but have been waiting way too long.

While we are honored to be part of "the solution" for those we are able to help, I hope more can be done to streamline the disability process for truly eligible claimants - who need help now.  If you or someone close to you is disabled, don't delay seeking help.  It can be a long process at best and the longer you wait to get qualified representation, the more difficult it will be.

My hat goes off to two very fine organizations (of which I am a member) that do a superb job in advocating for disability reform and claimants' rights.  One is the National Organization of Social Security Claimants Representatives (NOSSCR).  The other one is the National Association of Disability Representatives (NADR).  These organizations and their individual members are making a difference on behalf of the nation's disabled!
