REDSTONE VETERANS & SOCIAL SECURITY

Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville is home to a large population of veterans.  Our firm works with many veterans who in the process of getting a medical discharge, or who are already discharged from the army and have disability ratings from the Veterans Administration.

These veterans are often qualified for additional benefits from Social Security.  Here is a quick check list of facts about Social Security and wounded warriors (veterans):
  • You may receive full VA benefits and Social Security benefits at the same time.
  • Social Security benefits are not automatic; you must apply separately.
  • Your disability does not have to be service related to get Social Security benefits.
  • Social Security may deny disability benefits, even to qualified veterans.
  • An immediate appeal is the best way to protect your rights if denied.
  • Receiving SSDI benefits will not reduce your VA benefit or vice versa.
  • You may receive SSDI benefits even while you are still on active duty and while you are receiving military pay (if you are disabled and can't perform your military job).
The key factor is not whether you are still receiving military pay.  The key factor is whether or not you are able to work and perform your duties.  If not, you may collect substantial Social Security disability benefits even while on active duty (for example, while you are awaiting discharge for medical reasons).  Social Security will consider all of your medical conditions, whether or not they are directly related to military service.

The Forsythe Firm in Huntsville works closely with veterans to maximize their Social Security disability benefits, obtain maximum back pay and cut the processing time.  A veteran with a 100 percent permanent disability rating from the VA may qualify for expedited processing at Social Security.  The Forsythe Firm can file your application or appeal electronically and we are eligible for Direct Payment of Fees with the US Social Security Administration.

If you are a disabled veteran and need help maximizing your benefits, please contact the Forsythe Firm in Huntsville for a free, no risk and no obligation consultation.  You will be paired with a Social Security disability specialist who will work with you from start to finish.  We work with veterans all over Alabama and also have an office in the Nashville area to assist those who may live in Middle, TN.
