These veterans are often qualified for additional benefits from Social Security.  Here is a quick check list of facts about Social Security and wounded warriors (veterans):
  • You may receive full VA benefits and Social Security benefits at the same time.
  • Social Security benefits are not automatic; you must apply separately.
  • Your disability does not have to be service related to get Social Security benefits.
  • Social Security may deny disability benefits, even to qualified veterans.
  • An immediate appeal is the best way to protect your rights if denied.
  • Receiving SSDI benefits will not reduce your VA benefit or vice versa.
  • You may receive SSDI benefits even while you are still on active duty and while you are receiving military pay (if you are disabled and can't perform your military job).
The key factor is not whether you are still receiving military pay.  The key factor is whether or not you are able to work and perform your duties.  If not, you may collect substantial Social Security disability benefits even while on active duty (for example, while you are awaiting discharge for medical reasons).  Social Security will consider all of your medical conditions, whether or not they are directly related to military service.

YOU EARN SSDI BENEFITS - THEY ARE NOT WELFARE.

I speak truthfully when I tell people that Social Security disability is not welfare.  You paid for it, you earned it.  Claim it. HOW TO GET DISABILITY BENEFITS AT AGE 50

If you are applying for Social Security disability benefits, it is more likely that you will be approved if you are over age 50.  Why? Because of the medical-vocational guidelines.  These "grid rules" make it easier for persons who are of advanced age or who are approaching advanced age.
